Ronda in one day: a walking route through the essentials
One day is enough to see the essentials of Ronda if you plan the order well. This itinerary goes from the upper area (Alameda and bullring) to the old quarter and then down to the river, so most of the walk is downhill. It is a suggestion: adjust the order to your own schedule.
Step-by-step itinerary
- Alameda del Tajo and viewpoint. Start at the Alameda del Tajo, a tree-lined promenade on the edge of the cliff, and step out onto the balcony over the gorge. A good first look at the mountain landscape.
- The bullring. Very close is the Bullring (Royal Cavalry of Ronda) (Real Maestranza de Caballería), with its bullfighting museum and the stables of the Riding School.
- Puente Nuevo. Next door, the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge): 98 metres above the Tajo. Walk across it and look both ways.
- Cuenca Gardens and Santo Domingo Convent. The Cuenca Gardens give a view of the bridge from a different angle. Close by is the Santo Domingo Convent, next to the Aldehuela viewpoint.
- La Ciudad, the old quarter. Continue along Cuesta de Santo Domingo: the Casa del Rey Moro (Moorish King's House) with its water mine, the Palace of the Marquis of Salvatierra and the Mondragón Palace.
- Down to the river. Head down to the Old Bridge and the Arch of Philip V, and finish at the Arab Baths, the best preserved in Spain according to the app’s entry.
Practical tips
- Ronda is a city of slopes: wear comfortable shoes, and remember that the climb back up is harder than the way down.
- Leave time for lunch. The app has a where-to-eat section, with types of cuisine.
- If you have time left, the Ruta de las Puertas de Ronda walks past the five historic gates of the old Medina (2.7 km, about 1 h 30 min).
- The walkway into the Tajo gorge (Camino del Desfiladero del Tajo) charges an entry fee: check hours and prices beforehand.
Opening hours, prices and access conditions change over time: check the official sources for each place before you go.
